ESCALATE conference:1

April 29th, 2008 by Sheila Webber

I am at the ESCalate conference, which has the theme The Teaching-Research Interface: Implications for Practice in Higher Education and Further Education. ESCalate is the subject centre for education, and the conference is being held at Stirling University. There is a website at http://escalate.ac.uk/3936 but it does not have much info on it at the moment. I am giving a presentation tomorrow about inquiry based learning in our BSc Information Management Programme. When I have finished the ppt I will put it on slideshare (later today ;-) The first photo shows the conference bag, and the free ESCalate umbrella, but not the free ESCalate coffee carry-mug.

The delegates are academics from various Departments, incuding Education, and educational developers/researchers. The keynotes have been from Professor Gill Crozier, talking about her ESRC-funded project looking at working class students’ experiences of higher education, and from Professor Dai Hounsell, talking about some aspects of his team's ESRC-funded research into learning environments of undergraduate students.

There is a page about Prof Crozier's project here with some links to papers. Following wider questionnaires, they tracked 27 students over 2 years, who were based at four very different universities: one elite university, one pre-1992 university, one post-1992 university, and one college that did foundation degrees. The students were diverse in their home situations, as well as the nature of their university experience. For example, the elite university had a rule that students mustn't have outside jobs in their first tem, and they lived in halls, whereas at the college people\mostly lived at home and might be doing a lot of paid work, so that some of them scarcely identified themselves as "students".

Also, for example, while the students at the elite university had been identified as high flyers at school, nutured and therefore had quite positive views of themselves as learners, those from the college and post-1992 university might have low perceptions of their capabilities as learners. One interesting point was that the "traditional" system of the elite university was better at supporting students and helping them to feel at home in the university, whereas emphasis on "independent learning" and moves to e-learning (supposedly to make things more convenient for students) meant that it was even less likely that students would feel that they fitted in and were part of the university. This affects motivation and retention.

One thing that Dai Hounsell observed was that universities have tended to try and preserve the "elite" experience at least for their final year undergraduates, but there is an increasing gap between this final year experience and what students experience in first year. There has been a tendency for the first year experience to be more massified/generalised, with large lectures, use of teaching assistants and so forth. This made students potentially less prepared for a challenging final year: of course this is a familiar pattern from information literacy education, where librarians often seem to observe a sudden focus on information literacy in final year to support dissertation/project work, without a progression to this in previous years.

Cleaning up for the Olympics

“Beijing has given virtually no signs that it intends to keep the promises made to the international community in exchange for hosting the Games,” said Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. “On the contrary, we have witnessed a systematic effort to silence, suppress and repress Chinese citizens who are trying to push the government into greater respect for fundamental rights.” Human Righ...

The Efficiency of (the) American English Language

April 29th, 2008 by alexbarnett

As I've come learn while living in the US, the American English language is more efficient than its British English cousin. The difference between the two languages is more than just fonetic phonetic simplification - the general rule seems to be about using fewer letters and words as a whole. Here are some of the examples I've bumped into:

American English British English Diff count Links to notes
Four hundred twenty Four hundred and twenty 3 notes
Delimiter Deliminator 2 notes
Oriented Orientated 2 notes
I use less words than you You use fewer words than me 1 notes
anesthetist anaesthetist 1 notes
color colour 1 notes
program programme 2 notes
aluminum aluminium 1 notes
donut doughnut 3 notes
yogurt yoghurt 2 notes
ass arse 1 notes
Duh! Of course 4 notes

As we know, most rules have an exception, and the "using fewer letters and words" rule is no exception:

American English British English Diff

Triple 2% grande double mocha vanilla extra hot latte add non-fat whipped cream Cup of tea -67 notes

TRUCC Act Has A Number

April 29th, 2008 by Trucker Talk - Truck Blog

TRUCC Act Has A Number

Last week Trucker To Trucker reported that Senator Olympia Snowe, (R-Maine), and Senator Sherrod Brown, (D-Ohio) introduced a bill which requires by law that fuel surcharges to be passed on to the person that actually buys the fuel.

At that time the US Senate had not assigned a number to that bill.  That action has now been completed and the Bill is S 2910

It would be beneficial to voice your support for this initiative.  You can contact your Representative or Senator by clicking on these links – Representative or Senator

Cleaning up for the Olympics

April 29th, 2008 by Peter Barnett

“Beijing has given virtually no signs that it intends to keep the promises made to the international community in exchange for hosting the Games,” said Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. “On the contrary, we have witnessed a systematic effort to silence, suppress and repress Chinese citizens who are trying to push the government into greater respect for fundamental rights.” Human Rights Watch pointed to a growing pattern of using loosely defined subversion charges to suppress dissidents and activists ahead of the Games. On February 4, the writer L Gengsong was sentenced to four years in prison for “inciting subversion against state power,” becoming the sixth high profile dissident in less than a year to be arrested or sentenced under these charges.

In China it’s called cleansing, getting the "undesirables" off the streets, one such case is that of Hu Jia and his wife, Zeng Jingyan. Prior to his formal detention, Hu Jia had publicly expressed concerns over human rights abuses by police in Beijing, including the arrest of activists without the necessary legal procedures. This included the case of land rights activist Yang Chunlin and human rights defender Lu Gengsong, both also detained on subversion charges. In an article on his blog dated 10 September 2007, Hu Jia says: "Everyone should know that the country that is about to host the Olympics is one without democratic elections, freedom of religion, independent courts or independent unions. It prohibits protests and labour strikes. It is a state that carries out widespread torture, discrimination, and employs a large secret police system. It is a nation that violates human rights standards and human dignity, and is not ready to fulfil its international obligations." For human rights advocates and Chinese dissidents, Mr. Hu's detention is the most telling example of what they describe as a broadening crackdown on dissent as Beijing prepares to play host to the Olympic Games in August. Hu Jia has been convicted of “inciting subversion of state power” and sentenced to three and a half years in prison. "This verdict is punishment for Hu Jia's public critiques of human rights violations in China and a warning to any other activists in China who dare to raise human rights concerns publicly,” said Amnesty International.
The Writers in Prison Committee of ‘International PEN’ is shocked by the conviction of Hu Jia. Hu Jia is held at the Beijing Municipal Detention Centre, and there are fears for his health. International PEN considers Hu Jia to be held solely for peacefully exercising his right to free expression, which is protected under Article 35 of the Chinese Constitution and Article 19 of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which China is a signatory. PEN therefore calls for his immediate and unconditional release.
In a joint press conference with UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband in Beijing on 28 February 2008, China's foreign minister Yang Jiechi said: "No one will get arrested because he said that human rights are more important than the Olympics. This is impossible."
Reporters Without Borders say that Hu Jia’s trial is a dramatic example of how the rule of law is flouted in China. International condemnation has failed to stop the steamroller that has been given orders to silence one of Beijing’s most courageous human rights activists. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao claimed on 8 March 2008 that dissidents are not repressed.

As Cameron gets beaten by Punch and Judy, Brown condemns skunk from the sofa,

April 29th, 2008 by OurKingdom

Jon Bright (London, OK): The leaders of both major UK parties, in slightly different ways, promised some kind of "new politics" when they first assumed their respective offices. Brown promised revitalised governance, respect for parliament, an end to spin. Cameron promised an end to "Punch and Judy" politics, called for serious debate rather than points scoring. Today both, in different ways, have admitted abandoning those goals.

Way Forward for an English Parliament?,

April 29th, 2008 by OurKingdom

Gareth Young (Lewes, CEP): Anthony Barnett has asked me to write a piece about the “way forward” for the CEP - the Campaign for an English Parliament. To be honest it’s a difficult task, not because I can’t see a way forward but because I think it’s other people, rather than the CEP, that need to take the next step.
